Deciding on what to eat before and after your workout is common question health professionals receive. One big factor to consider is that not everyone is the same. Case in point, you may have a co-worker who can eat a protein-dense meal an hour before a workout. If you attempted the same feat your head would be over a toilet.

The general rule of thumb is 1-3 hours and of course, that is dependent on what your specific meal is and what type of exercise you will be doing.

That said, there are some guidelines and specific foods that can be beneficial for everyone! Try to focus on fruits and fiber rich foods that will provide you with energy and keep you going for longer periods of time.

Examples of pre-workout snacks to provide you that energy you will need to include:

  1. Banana
  2. Greek Yogurt (No sugar)
  3. Smoothie (Water, Ginger, Banana, Kale, Strawberries)
  4. Dried Fruit
  5. Almonds

The benefits and purpose of the specific snack or meal are very dependent on the activity you’re doing. Is it body-building, running, moderate activity, weight-loss, sports, etc.?

The purpose of your meals and snacks need to focus in on sustained energy, strength gains, and mental focus. If you think you’re not receiving that from your pre-workout snacks or meals then you may need to re-think your diet choices. For example, if you’re going to crush a big mac meal before a workout, you clearly are not going to receive the benefits of sustained energy, strength gains, and mental focus.

The impact of these decisions is much bigger than you might think. Think about your body as a car for a second, and imagine the maintenance and fuel you need to do to make it run at its optimal level. The same principle applies to your body before and after it participates in strenuous exercise.

Before and after exercise, look to consume 20-40 grams of protein along with complex carbohydrates to ensure your body has enough energy to sustain your workout and help your body repair following.
