Now everyone knows that budgeting for “better nutrition” can be difficult. You look over at the organic section and you may think, “Do I need to spend more money on that avocado?”. How can I maximize my budget but at the same time eat healthy. Firstly, let’s break this down and provide you with some strategies for affordable healthy eating.

In regards to fiber rich foods, you can load up on all sorts of affordable options, even if they come in a can. Fruit becomes a little more tricky, according to the “Environmental Working Group” here is a list of the list for “Clean Fifteen,” EWG selected the following:

  1. Avocados
  2. Sweet corn
  3. Pineapples
  4. Sweet peas (frozen)
  5. Onions
  6. Papayas
  7. Eggplants
  8. Asparagus
  9. Kiwis
  10. Cabbage
  11. Cauliflower
  12. Cantaloupes
  13. Broccoli
  14. Mushrooms
  15. Honeydew

It’s important to understand, that just because a specific fruit or vegetable is on a “dirty dozen” list does out out-weigh the nutritional benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables.

Some affordable foods you can purchase at the grocery store include:

  1. Chick Peas
  2. Lentils
  3. Red Beans
  4. Bagged Spinach
  5. Broccoli
  6. Carrots
  7. Quinoa
  8. Squash
  9. Oatmeal

It’s important to know that eating healthy on a budget can be done! We don’t need to explain the health risks of unhealthy eating, but it will take a bit more effort.
